In order to meet
the changing needs of this rural parish, this church in Darke County,
Ohio was has been nearly doubled in size. The expansion included enlarging
the sanctuary from 350 seats to nearly 630 seats, as well as a Gathering
space for the congregation before and after mass. The existing building
is constructed of wood and exterior plaster stucco in a mission style.
The successful effort was to build an addition for this structure which
blended with the current architecture
The
building addition employed exposed roof trusses which had the same form
and configuration as the plaster ceiling of the existing church, however,
the total ceiling height of the building addition was higher than the
existing ceiling. The use of the roof trusses allowed the integration
of the existing form with the new forms. The windows at the trancepts
of the addition are historic stained glass windows removed from another
church, restored, and re-installed in this building. The screen behind
the altar is a custom-made wrought iron artifact crafted by a member
of the parish.
